Domain Names – How to Select the Best Domain Name For Your Business

Frank Shilling
Starting a new business? What to create a web presence on line? If so then you're going to need a name. Your business name is an important piece of real estate and, of course, it will become the focal point of all the branding that you do for your business. Depending on the name you select, you'll convey a lot of information about who you are and what you do.

If you're starting a business, you're going to need to invest in a domain name. It's the obvious first place to start. If possible, try to find a domain name that is similar or the exact name of your business. With so many domain names already purchased by others, sometimes it can take a while to actually find a name that you can purchase.

If possible, pick something that is memorable. There are so many generic names out there. And generic means one thing – boring. Have you ever looked at names of personal financial planning firms? Most of them use words like "asset strategies," "capstone," and "financial planning." Not very imaginative. And when you're trying to remember their name, it's difficult because it's so similar to so many others.

If you're planning to do business under your own name, then make sure that you own the URL for your own name. From a personal branding standpoint, that's just a good thing to do anyway! You may need to get creative here as well since so many names have already been reserved as well.

When purchasing your domain name, make sure to buy the .com version of it at a minimum because that is the site people will naturally default to when inputting something online. Don't include numbers in it because you'll be spelling out your domain name until the day you die. When you have 2 in it – do you mean the numeral 2, "to,""too," or "two"? You'll have this problem with all numbers should you purchase a domain name with one in it. Also, do not use hyphens or weird spellings. Again, if someone only has the benefit of hearing your domain name – they'll never be able to find your site.

Keep things simple for you and the people who are trying to find you online. Select a domain name that works for everyone.
